Intelligent Engineering has developed and commercialized Sandwich Plate Systems (SPS), a structural composite material that offers substantial performance, economy, safety and sustainability.
SPS is an excellent alternative to both stiffened steel and reinforced concrete anddelivers high stiffness to weight ratio, simpler fabrication, improved performance and increased safety. In detail, it is a composite material comprising of two metal plates bonded with a polyurethane elastomer core, which transfers shear between each plate, eliminating the need for stiffeners and precluding local faceplate buckling. The thicknesses of the composite elements are tailored to meet the needs of each application.
In the refurbishment of the refinery tanks, for example, the unique advantage of SPS method is the full steel plate re-instatement using only cold-works in explosive atmosphere with tank to safely remain in service.
In general SPS is much simpler and more robust than stiffened steel plate and much lighter and faster to erect than reinforced concrete.
All SPS structures, such as refinery’s tanks, bridges, sport stadiums, floor systems and blast walls are designed and produced using industry standard techniques, approved both in EU and North America.
