In this respect, Alfa Laval has developed well proven solutions, already installed and operating on board vessels globally, improving their environmental profile and assisting to meet with latest regulatory requirements.

            1.MICRO BOILER (applicable for any vessel type)  

Micro Boiler is the latest Alfa Laval Waste Heat Recovery System, designed for use on small engines with much higher efficiency than all previous designs.

• Micro boiler can be fitted on all Auxiliary Engines from 400KW and above
• Coiled fin tubes design make it the smaller Waste Heat Recovery System in the market
• Equipped with automatic bypass & automatic steam blowers system
• Compact design (2m height) easy to be installed especially as retrofit
• Steam produced can support or fulfil steam needs in port
• Positive influence on vessel’s carbon footprint
• Easy maintenance

Benefits (indicative example for a HYUNDAI-HIMSEN 6H25/33):

• At 75% AE load, the expected steam production is 476kg/h from each micro boiler
• Offers significant fuel savings i.e. the equivalent boiler’s fuel consumption in order to produce same amount of steam corresponds to 36,5 kg/h that equals to 876 kg/day fuel saving
• Minimization of the boiler operation when in port

          2. E-PowerPack (applicable for any vessel with excess steam or any vessel equipped with AE that can accommodate a Micro boiler) 

Compact module that converts waste heat into electric power by using either the waste-excessive steam from EGB and/or the WHR or the jacket cooling water.
Utilization of the wasted thermal energy has a direct effect on the vessel’s fuel consumption and therefore leads to CO2 emissions reduction.
E-powerpack skid comes in 2 standardized designs, supplying to vessel’s grid 100 – 200 kW, subject to vessel’s operating profile.
E-powerpack skid is supplied as  a “plug and play” efficiency module, while its small footprint (1.5m2 to 4m2) makes this upgrade suitable for any vessel.

 3. Alfa Laval’s Low Load Optimizer Kit (applicable for tanker vessels – OL /D type boilers) 

The low load Burner optimizing kit is a simple and low cost solution that can be installed in all OL & D type AL boilers which directly increases the burner operating envelope 10-15%  on the low limit, providing immediate valuable benefits to the vessel.
When Low load burner is fitted, boilers operate from 5% up to 100%  (compared to the regular 20% to 100%).

Benefits :

• Reducing electrical consumption from 63,7kW to 3,6kW ~ 2000 kWh /year
• Minimizing the energy losses, equal to 1.5-2 kg oil/purge (assuming 60 purges daily, 300 days yearly ~30mt)
• Power saving on aux. engine since no “heavy starts” are being required
• Eliminating the boiler start stops (between 50-80 start stops/day) thus minimizing burner maintenance
• Very accurate combustion regulation due to the VFD Fan control
